Jean Prouvé 'Grille' Aluminium Façade Panel, France 1956

Discover this original aluminium façade panel, model ‘Grille’, by Jean Prouvé, circa 1956–1958. The panel was originally installed as part of the façade of the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) in Lyon, France. Designed as an architectural element, the surface is defined by closely spaced horizontal ribs that continue around the raised perimeter, giving the aluminium an exceptional sense of depth and rhythm. Removed from its original architectural context, the panel takes on an almost abstract quality. Its large scale, repetition of horizontal lines and subtle variations in the aged aluminium allow it to function equally well as a freestanding architectural object or wall-mounted work. The surface retains visible traces of its former use, with oxidation, marks and variations developed over time. The reverse reveals the original construction and remnants associated with its installation, preserving an important part of the panel’s architectural history. A rare surviving architectural element that reflects Jean Prouvé’s distinctive approach to prefabrication, material and construction. Measurements: H 170 x W 108 x D 4 cm
