FUU #4 - Contemporary Chair in Wood and Urushi Lacquer

FUU #4 is a one-of-a-kind chair handmade from Douglas fir and nylon, finished using traditional Japanese urushi techniques. The back is finished in Togidashi-jō Kuroroiro Urushi, a traditional high-shine lacquer finish that creates a smooth, deep and highly reflective surface across the wood. This refined finish contrasts with the textured nylon, which is coated in urushi, transforming it from a flexible, fabric-like material into a rigid lacquered surface. The combination brings together smoothness and texture, refinement and familiarity, while demonstrating how urushi can transform materials with very different physical qualities. The result sits between functional furniture and sculpture. This piece is made to order. Limited Edition & Handmade Variation FUU is produced as a limited edition, with each chair individually handmade. Subtle variations in form, surface, colour and finish will occur between pieces as a result of the making process and the character of the materials. Each chair is therefore one-of-a-kind, with its own particular qualities and trace of its making. Urushi & Care Urushi is a natural material whose surface can subtly change over time. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may affect the colour and depth of the finish. This natural evolution is part of the character and beauty of urushi, allowing the surface to develop over time.
