Sculptural Solid Elm Coffee Table, 1960s French Design, Organic Form

An exceptional sculptural coffee table originating from France in the 1960s, executed in solid elm with a beautifully expressive and organic character. The table is defined by its substantial, naturally shaped top, preserving the irregularities and distinctive features of the original timber. A dramatic opening runs through the centre, revealing the raw inner structure of the wood and creating a striking contrast with the smoothly finished surfaces. Natural knots, cracks and variations in the grain remain visible throughout and form an integral part of the design. The thick top rests on four solid wooden legs, subtly angled outwards and connected to the underside with visible metal fittings. The restrained construction gives the table a strong architectural presence while keeping the remarkable natural form of the wood at the centre of the design. Particularly beautiful is the rich and highly expressive grain of the elm, which flows across the surface and emphasizes its organic silhouette. The softly rounded edges further enhance the sculptural quality of the piece. With its combination of natural material, simple construction and expressive form, the table reflects the strong interest in organic forms and solid wood found in French design during the 1960s. It functions equally well as a coffee table or as a sculptural object within an interior. The elm has developed a beautiful warm patina over time, with natural cracks, knots, irregularities and traces of age that contribute to the unique character of the piece.
