One-of-a-kind piece

Ven is a coil-thrown earthenware vase engobed with terra sigillata, hand polished and raku fired in metallic gas reduction. A wide, compressed body swells to a broad shoulder, then draws in sharply toward a small foot, giving the piece a poised, almost spinning silhouette. Above, a short neck rises into a wide, flat lip that opens like a disc. Rust, burnt sienna and deep orange spread across the upper body, held within a fine web of crackle left by the smoke. Toward the base the colour gives way to smoky bronze and soft metallic gold, while sweeps of black drift across the shoulder where flame and reduction have taken hold. Faint horizontal lines circle the body, traces of its making, and catch the light differently with every angle. No firing can be repeated, so this piece is one of a kind. It stands as a single sculptural statement. Made by hand in France by Juliette Pénélope Pépin.

FAQ
Can this vase hold water for fresh flowers, or is it intended as a decorative/dry-arrangement piece only? Raku and terra sigillata are typically porous.
This piece is intended as a decorative object and is not designed to hold water. For fresh flowers, we recommend using a waterproof liner inside the vase.
Is the interior sealed or glazed in any way, given raku firing usually leaves the body porous?
The interior is left unsealed and remains porous, in keeping with the traditional raku firing process.
What are the recommended care and cleaning instructions for the hand-polished terra sigillata and smoke-fired crackle surface?
Each piece is raku fired with a hand-polished terra sigillata surface, where the colours and markings left by fire and smoke are integral to the work. To dust, wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth or a soft brush. Avoid water, detergents, solvents and abrasive sponges, which can dull the polish or lift the smoke markings. Handle with clean, dry hands, holding the piece by its body rather than the neck or lip. As raku earthenware is porous and not watertight, place a glass or waterproof liner inside for fresh flowers; dried stems may be arranged directly. Display indoors on a stable surface, away from damp areas and heat sources. This piece is decorative and not suitable for food or drink. With this care, the surface will retain its depth and character over time.
As a one-of-a-kind piece, does it come with a signed certificate of authenticity, artist's signature, or numbering?
Yes, this one-of-a-kind piece is signed by the artist and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Is the base finished or protected (e.g. felt/cork pad) to prevent scratching surfaces it is placed on?
The base is left raw and unprotected, so we recommend placing it on a protective pad or mat to safeguard delicate surfaces.
Since each firing is unique, will the exact colors and crackle pattern match the photos, or should I expect variation from what is shown?
The piece you see in the photographs is the exact one you will receive, with its unique colours and crackle pattern.
