One-of-a-kind piece
  • LIMITED EDITION WORK
  • INCLUDES A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY
Narang is a coil-thrown earthenware vase engobed with terra sigillata, hand polished and raku fired in metallic gas reduction. Its high, rounded shoulder tapers in a long, slender line toward a gently flared foot, while a short, narrow neck opens into a wide, cupped lip with a russet rim. The surface divides in two: on one side, warm tones of rust and burnt sienna; on the other, a deep smoke-black that gives way to a mottled, metallic grey where the reduction has taken hold, like lichen spreading across stone. The polished shoulder holds a soft satin sheen, while faint throwing lines circle the body and catch the light differently with every angle. No firing can be repeated, so this piece is one of a kind. It stands as a single sculptural statement. Made by hand in France by Juliette Pénélope Pépin.

FAQ
Can this vase safely hold water for fresh flowers, or is it decorative only? Raku and terra sigillata are often porous.
This vase is decorative only and best suited to dry arrangements. As raku earthenware is porous and not watertight, we recommend using a glass or waterproof liner inside if you wish to display fresh flowers.
Is the piece signed by Juliette Pénélope Pépin and does it come with a signed certificate of authenticity?
Yes, the piece is signed by Juliette Pénélope Pépin and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.
What are the recommended care and cleaning instructions for the polished terra sigillata and raku surface (e.g. can it be wiped with water, does the satin sheen require special treatment)?
Each piece is raku fired with a hand-polished terra sigillata surface, and the colours and markings left by fire and smoke are integral to the work. To preserve them, dust gently with a soft, dry cloth or soft brush, and avoid water, detergents, solvents and abrasive sponges, which can dull the polish or lift the smoke markings. Handle the piece with clean, dry hands, holding it by the body rather than the neck or lip. As raku earthenware is porous and not watertight, place a glass or waterproof liner inside for fresh flowers, while dried stems can be arranged directly. Display indoors on a stable surface, away from damp areas and heat sources. This piece is decorative and not suitable for food or drink. With this care, the surface will retain its depth and character over time.
Is the foot/base finished with felt or a protective coating to prevent scratching furniture surfaces?
The base is left raw and unglazed. We recommend placing the vase on a protective surface or adding a felt pad to prevent any scratching of delicate furniture.
Is this vase suitable for indoor use only, or can it be placed outdoors/in humid environments given the raku firing?
This vase is designed for indoor use only and should be kept away from humid environments given its raku firing.
How is this fragile one-of-a-kind piece packaged for safe shipping (e.g. custom crate, insured)?
As a one-of-a-kind piece, each vase is packed with the greatest care. It is carefully wrapped, secured with custom-fitted padding and placed in a double box to protect it from shocks and movement during transit. Shipments are handled by a dedicated delivery service specialising in fragile objects and are fully insured for the value of the piece, with a tracking number provided as soon as the vase is on its way. Upon delivery, please open the parcel promptly and keep all packaging. In the unlikely event of damage, please report it within 48 hours with photos so a claim can be handled quickly.
