One-of-a-kind piece

Cinis is a coil-thrown earthenware vase engobed with terra sigillata, hand polished and raku fired in metallic gas reduction. A high, rounded shoulder, softly pressed in on one side, tapers toward a narrow foot and gathers above into a short neck that opens into a fine, flared lip. The surface reads first as deep gunmetal black, then reveals itself in the light: silvery, almost pewter reflections across the shoulder, smoky bronze through the body, and a warm copper-brown at the neck and rim. Near the base, flecks of rust and ochre surface where the reduction has loosened its hold. A fine, mottled texture covers the whole piece, recalling oxidised metal or lichen on stone, and shifts with every angle. No firing can be repeated, so this piece is one of a kind. It stands as a single sculptural statement. Made by hand in France by Juliette Pénélope Pépin.

FAQ
Is this vase waterproof and suitable for fresh flowers with water, or is it intended as a decorative/dry piece only?
This vase is intended as a decorative piece only and is not watertight. For fresh flowers, place a waterproof liner or small glass tube inside the neck.
Does the piece come with a signed certificate of authenticity and is it signed/stamped by Juliette Pénélope Pépin?
Yes, each piece is signed by the artist and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
What are the recommended care and cleaning instructions for the metallic raku finish (e.g. can it be wiped with water, does the finish require sealing)?
The hand-polished terra sigillata surface requires gentle care to preserve the colours and smoke markings left by the firing process. Dust it with a soft, dry cloth or a soft brush, and avoid water, detergents, solvents and abrasive sponges, which can dull the polish or lift the markings. Handle the piece with clean, dry hands, holding it by the body rather than the neck or lip. As raku earthenware is porous and not watertight, fresh flowers should be arranged in a glass or waterproof liner placed inside, while dried stems can be arranged directly. Display indoors on a stable surface, away from damp areas and heat sources. With this care, the surface will retain its depth and character over time.
What is the inner diameter of the neck/opening, to know what stems or arrangements can fit?
The neck has an inner diameter of approximately 1.5–2 cm. This narrow opening is best suited to a single stem or a few slender ones, such as a dried branch, grasses, a seed head or a delicate flower, rather than full bouquets, and the vase stands beautifully on its own as a sculptural piece. As it is not watertight, fresh stems can be placed in a small glass tube inserted into the neck.
Is the base finished/felted to protect furniture surfaces, and does the vase sit stably on a flat surface?
The base is raw and unglazed. We recommend placing it on a protective surface or pad to safeguard delicate furniture.
Since each firing is unique, can a similar piece be commissioned if this exact one sells, or is this strictly one-of-a-kind with no variation available?
Yes, a similar piece can be commissioned. As each firing is unique, the commissioned piece will carry its own natural variations.
