STUDIO VON SCHOENEBECK

STUDIO VON SCHOENEBECK is a Munich-based creative collaboration between designer Johannes von Schoenebeck and curator Magdalena Shterianova. With backgrounds in design, fine art, and film, they merge conceptual thinking with hands-on making. Magdalena, who grew up in a film family in Moscow, studied Art History in Munich and directed several short films before turning to photography and design. Johannes trained as a furniture maker and holds a Master’s in Design Products from the Royal College of Art. Their practice spans collectible design and functional art, exploring memory, emotion, and cultural heritage through poetic, narrative forms. Their studio is also their home—tucked under the roof, filled with prototypes, marquettes, samples, books, and ever-evolving ideas.

Fire, in its beauty and danger, opens up a space for contemplating the transient within these already burnt wooden candle holders. The candleholder carries a rich heritage, inter-weaving tales of tradition, origins, and a longing for beauty.

THE STORY
TETRIS first caught attention as a prototype made from scrap wood during Kocherlball, an annual traditional Munich celebration. Every year in the middle of summer, people gather shortly after midnight, bringing their picnics, cutlery, and candles to illuminate the many tables of the still-sleeping and dark beer garden. With the first drinks served deep into the night, they experience the sunrise in the magical light of hundreds of chandeliers and dance into the morning dew. On the eve of the celebration the studio crafted three rough prototypes of the candle holders specifically for the ball night. Many attendees of the ball were so impressed by these rough prototypes that the began to purchase them directly from the table. This triggered the creation of the first edition of the chandeliers.

Beech wood, metal inserts, red paint, shou sugi ban, fire
2024
holds 7 candles
Fire, in its beauty and danger, opens up a space for contemplating the transient within these already burnt wooden candle holders. Its sharp, controlled geometry is softened by a refined finish, reinforcing the dialogue between structure and fluidity. A delicate engraving subtly nods to the novel’s themes, capturing the essence of its inspiration while keeping the overall aesthetic sharp and clean. The engraved quotes reference the tradition of benches with dedication plaques. In the novel, it is a site of fateful encounters, mystery, and the merging of reality with the surreal. Just like those benches carry personal dedications, the engraving turns the chair into a place of memory, devotion, and eternal return — mirroring Margarita’s search for the Master. The engraved quotes from the novel transform the object into a timeless narrative piece. Made with local artisans.

MASTER & MARGARITA | A love story beyond time: Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita (1928–1940) is a novel about love, freedom, and the supernatural. The Master, a tormented writer, burns his manuscript, despairing at the world’s rejection. Margarita, his devoted lover, is willing to sacrifice everything — even her soul — to bring him back. Though they exist separately, their love is only truly fulfilled when they are reunited. In a world shaped by contrasts — logic and magic, control and surrender, order and chaos — their bond transcends time and space.

Raw aluminium, handfinished to a matte texture, engraving by stencil
Limited edition of 6 stainless steel plates by STUDIO VON SCHOENEBECK (2025).
